Motorcycle helmets — quality vs price?
I’m just getting into riding and I’m shopping helmets. There are a couple more expensive models (hundred dollar range) I’ve seen that I like the style, and others that are a lot cheaper (fifty dollar range) but basically similar style. Generally, is there any difference in quality and protection, DOT and Snell being the same, or are you paying for a brand, like so much other stuff?
Specifically — Z1R vs Bell or Hawk.
Hi everyone– thanks for the replies — first I wouldn’t even think of touching a bike without a helmet, and where I am its the law anyway. Like you say, you don’t want to have sudden second thoughts when the SUV pulls out in front — I DON’T want to cheap myself to death — on the other hand, I don’t want to spend $150 for a helmet thats not better than a $50 one — tho would prefer Snell in either case…
Once they have reached a certain level of safety rating there is little to choose from them in terms of protection, but there is in longevity and usability, the more expensive lids tend to be easier to replace the visor and padding, like the cheek pads can be removed, cleaned and replaced, the overall standards of manufacture are better and the parts fit together well, materials used are lighter, wind noise is cut down and ventilation tends to be better.
But there is no point in buying any helmet if the fit isn’t right for your head – heads and helmets vary in shape and volume – so find a style that fits properly, rather than one that looks good.
