motorcycle helmets. I want a low volume helmet, but what/where?
does anyone know where i can buy non-dot approved helmets. all the dot approved helmets i came across other than Arai’s have large volume to them. The difference in the sizing is just the changing of the inner paddings. I am short and skinny so normal helmets make me look like Rick Moranis in his Darth Vader helmet in Space Balls. I just want a helmet that doesn’t look so big on me.

Simply not true. DOT and SNELL standards are designed to test for a completely different TYPE of impact. One is not better than the other…except in certain types of crashes. Tests tend to show that DOT helmets are safer and protect your noggin’ on harder impacts, and SNELL helmets are better for glancing blows.

My interests are more in two wheeled motorsports, except for NHRA/IHRA drag racing. NONE of the motorcycle sanctioning bodies that I have ever raced with have ever asked for anything other than DOT and/or SNELL rated. Further more, no one has ever checked my helmets. NONE of the local drag strips has ever checked my helmets for anything other than it was on my head, and the rule books don’t specify anything other than “An approved saftey helmet that covers the top and sides of the head. No ’shorty’ style helmets allowed”.
To the original poster: What you are refering to is what the industry calls a novelty helmet. For the protection they provide you might as well shave your head and have a DOT or Snell seal tattooed to the back of your head. I have personally taken a normal claw hammer and droped it on one of these things and had it shatter. Not swung at it, not beat the ever loving $h!t out of it. Droped it.
Novelity helmets are obviously illegal in states with mandantory helmet laws, so a ticket could be forthcoming if you live in one of those states. They won’t protect your head in the event of a fall, so really whats the point?
Remember the old BELL helmets slogan… If you’ve got a ten dollar head by a ten dollar helmet, if your head is worth more…
