motorcycle helmets snell approved

Is my helmet ok?
I have a HJC motorcycle helmet. It is DOT and Snell approved. Yesterday I set it on my motorcycle and it accidentally fell on the ground. Do I need to get a new helmet or is it ok. There are no cracks only small scratches. Someone told me that after a hard hit, a helmet is no good anymore. Is that true?
any drop over 3 feet will result in a defective helmet or if it fell off the end of a normal height table even if there is no visible signs of damage to the outside of the helmet, the inside material that is suppose to absorb the impact might be damaged or compromised ,so I would get a new one
